By India Today News Desk: Gita Press, Gorakhpur, will be awarded the Gandhi Peace Prize 2021, an official announcement said on Sunday. The jury headed by Prime Minister Modi unanimously decided to select Gita Press as the recipient of the award.
However, the decision has not gone down well with the Congress. Party leader Jairam Ramesh criticized the move, and called the selection of Gita Press for the award a "travesty".

Taking to Twitter, he also said that giving the Gandhi Peace Prize 2021 to Gita Press, would be like "awarding Savarkar and Godse". He argued that Akshaya Mukul, an author had written a biography titled 'Gita Press and the Making of Hindu India'. Ramesh said the book talks about Mukul's "stormy" relations with Mahatma Gandhi.

Gita Press is one of the world's largest publishers, having published 41.7 crore books in 14 languages, including 16.21 crore Shrimad Bhagvad Gita, an official statement said.
Meanwhile, PM Modi congratulated Gita Press for winning the prize and commended its contribution to the field.
"I congratulate Gita Press, Gorakhpur on being conferred the Gandhi Peace Prize 2021. They have done commendable work over the last 100 years towards furthering social and cultural transformations among the people. @GitaPress," PM Modi tweeted.
UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath also congratulated the Gorakhpur-based 'Gita Press' for being conferred the Gandhi Peace Prize 2021.
The Gandhi Peace Prize is an annual award, given for outstanding contribution towards political change in social, economic sphere through non-violent and other Gandhian methods.
